Road to Adoption: Jackie & Chris's Story
Just over five years ago, 7-year-old Kyle was removed from his mother’s care and placed with licensed foster parents, Jackie and Chris. After two months, Kyle was finally settling into his new normal. Yet, Jackie and Chris received a phone call that would change their lives once again. Kyle’s mom had just given birth to another baby, and the Child Protective Investigator wanted to know if they would be willing to take in Kyle’s newborn brother. Without hesitation, the family made the decision to keep the brothers together and welcomed Josiah into their home at just eight days old.
For the next three years, Jackie and Chris poured their hearts into fostering both boys while their mother worked through her case plan in hopes of reunification. They facilitated extra visits, sent photos and videos of every milestone, and kept her included in as much of the boys’ lives as possible. Their goal was to give the mother support and motivation as she pursued reunification.
But after three years, their mother continued to struggle with parts of her case plan, and it was decided that Jackie and Chris would become the boys’ permanent guardians. This meant Kyle and Josiah would remain with them long-term. Jackie and Chris gained the legal authority to make decisions about the boys’ education, health, and overall well-being, while still ensuring their mother could maintain a healthy relationship with them.
Fast forward another year, and now 11-year-old Kyle was struggling deeply with a sense of not belonging. He carried the last name of a man he never knew, a difficult relationship with his mother, and a love for Jackie and Chris that, to him, still felt fragile.
Kyle longed for true permanency. He wanted Jackie, Chris, and Josiah to be his forever family. He bravely shared his feelings with his biological mother, who then spoke with Jackie and Chris. She asked them if he were to surrender her parental rights to Kyle and Josiah, would they adopt the children and give them a forever home. One that promises them security and stability, while still allowing her to have visits with the children through an open adoption.
After consulting with attorneys and case managers, a petition was brought before the judge, beginning the process of making Kyle and Josiah officially part of their forever family.
And now, after months of waiting, the news they had all been waiting for has finally arrived: Kyle and Josiah will officially be adopted and Jackie and Chris’s family will finally be complete.
